El pira caldo is a fish soup that is part of Paraguay's traditional cuisine. The Guarani word Pira means "fish". The soup has a high caloric and protein content.
El piracaldo is prepared with any type of fish, but cod, tilapia, and corvina are especially preferred.  The most popular and rooted version of the flavor of the broth is obtained by frying onions, tomatoes, grasshoppers, and parsley with a bit of fat (pork or beef).

The Guarani groups were large consumers of fish and prepared fish meal. Fish was the main source of protein in their diet, along with game hens similar to those in Spain and abundant hunting animals.
